FUN FACTS ON BROADFORD:
Broadford is the second-largest settlement on the Isle of Skye and has a long history shaped by its position on the island’s east coast.
The name Broadford comes from the Gaelic An t-Àth Leathann, meaning “the wide ford,” referring to the crossing point over the Broadford River. The area was historically part of the lands of the MacKinnon and MacDonald clans, and its sheltered bay made it an important location for fishing, trade and travel.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, Broadford developed as a small rural and fishing community, while the arrival of steamships helped connect Skye with mainland Scotland and encouraged trade.
The village later became an important stopping point for travellers, particularly after the construction of improved roads and, in the 20th century, the Skye Bridge. Today, Broadford remains an important centre for the island, providing shops, services and accommodation, while its surrounding landscape reflects Skye’s rich Gaelic, agricultural and maritime heritage.
